I Wish Life Came With a Syllabus

Hey Reader,

Maybe it’s just me, but every once in a while I wish life came with a good old reliable syllabus.

Tell me where I need to be and when.

Tell me what to learn.

Tell me what order to learn it in.

Tell me why it matters.

For most of my adult life, that’s been my request:

“Just give me the syllabus.”

Done.

I'll do the work.

Looking back, that's how I found my way into almost everything that has shaped my career.

When I moved to New York to become an actor, I kept following the breadcrumbs.

One class led to the next. One opportunity led to a chance meeting. That led to another opportunity.

I kept asking one question:

"What do I need to do?"

As long as the path made sense…

As long as I understood the logic behind it…

I followed it.

But recently I realized something.

It's not just that I like having a syllabus.

I need to believe in the system behind it.

That distinction matters.

When I believe a system can genuinely help me get where I want to go, I'm all in. I'll study, practice, ask questions, and keep showing up.

But when the system feels bloated, inefficient, or disconnected from the outcome…

I don't become rebellious.

I become reluctant.

Looking back, that realization explains why some jobs energized me while others slowly drained me.

It also reminded me that the systems we build around our work aren't neutral.

They either create momentum…

or they quietly steal it.

Maybe that's true for you, too.

If you've been feeling stuck lately, maybe the problem isn't your motivation.

Maybe you've been trying to follow a syllabus you no longer believe in.

That doesn't mean you need to throw everything away.

It might simply mean it's time to ask a better question:

"What's the simplest path that will actually move me forward?"

Because I've found that momentum doesn't usually come from doing more.

It comes from showing up and believing in the path you're following.

And if you're having trouble finding that path…

or trusting it once you've found it…

Reach out.

Helping people find a system they actually believe in, one built from what's already true about how they work, is what the Merge Process is for. It's also what I do best.

Until next time,

Kevin

Hey Reader, On the drive home from Ohio, I spent about four and a half hours listening to a podcast about Disney. Yes. Four and a half hours. If you know me, you're probably not particularly surprised. It was the second part of Acquired's deep dive into the Walt Disney Company, starting in 1984 and bringing the story pretty much to the present day. And what resonated with me wasn't really the Disney success story. It was its..."Now what?" story. The episode began by taking us back to 1984....

Hey Reader, On the drive home from Ohio this week, I kept thinking about something I’ve believed for a long time: When you have the chance, take the chance and go. This particular trip wasn’t the easiest one to take. My dad is 80, and traveling with him these days requires some planning. A wheelchair. A walker. Supplies. Making sure wherever we’re going is accessible. Then, a few days before we were supposed to leave, the coolant light came on in my car. Then we thought my dad might have a...

Hey Reader, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the things we carry with us from one chapter of our lives into another. Sometimes we don’t even realize we’re carrying them. For me, one of those things is acting. I spent years as a professional actor…technically I still am. And when I moved into coaching, strategy, facilitation and the other work I’ve done since, I thought I was moving on to something different. Turns out, I brought a lot more of acting with me than I realized. And here’s...
